No início da década, a equipe foi bi de construtores (1981) e novamente campeã de pilotos (1982, com Keke Rosberg).
Outros momentos importantes foram as parcerias com Honda e Renault para fornecimento de motores, coroadas com os títulos de pilotos em 1987 (Nelson Piquet), 1992 (Nigel Mansell), 1993 (Alain Prost), 1996 (Damon Hill) e 1997 (Jacques Villeneuve). No período, a Williams foi campeã de construtores em 1986, 1987, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996 e 1997.
De 2000 a 2005, a Williams se manteve competitiva com uma parceria com a BMW, mas na época Frank Williams não quis vender sua equipe à montadora alemã. Desde então, a equipe entrou em declínio e obteve apenas uma vitória, com Pastor Maldonado no GP da Espanha de 2012. No começo da era híbrida, em 2014, a Williams teve um renascimento com Valtteri Bottas e Felipe Massa, com os motores Mercedes. Mas aos poucos a equipe perdeu competitividade a ponto de ser a pior do grid em 2018 e 2019. Em 2020, a Williams evoluiu de forma significativa mas ainda não marcou pontos.
Um dos pilotos deste ano é o canadense Nicholas Latifi, que levou um importante aporte financeiro de seus patrocinadores. Pai do piloto, o empresário Michael Latifi até emprestou dinheiro para a Williams devido às dificuldades financeiras pela pandemia de coronavírus.
Com a venda da Williams, por mais que o futuro financeiro do time esteja garantido, termina uma era, já que Frank Williams sempre disse que sua organização manteria as características de ser independente e “garagista”, ou seja, com tudo sendo tocado em família.
A Williams foi uma das primeiras equipes a anunciar a assinatura do novo Pacto de Concórdia, documento que rege as ações comerciais da Fórmula 1. Isso garante a escuderia na categoria pelo menos até a temporada de 2025.
