Segundo ranking da revista Forbes, o português, na segunda colocação e cinco vezes melhor do mundo, e o argentino, em terceiro e dono de seis conquistas individuais, só estão atrás do boxeador americano Floyd Mayweather.
De acordo com a Forbes, Mayweather faturou US$ 915 milhões (R$ 3,7 bilhões) nos últimos dez anos. Dessa quantia, US$ 500 milhões (R$ 2 bilhões) foram embolsados somente nas lutas contra Manny Pacquiao e Conor McCregor, em 2015 e 2017, respectivamente.
Cristiano Ronaldo, que está em sua segunda temporada na Juventus (ITA), faturou US$ 800 milhões (R$ 3,2 bilhões) na última década, enquanto Messi somou US$ 750 milhões (R$ 3 bilhões).
O argentino, no entanto, se considerado o ano de 2019, foi o atleta mais bem pago: US$ 127 milhões (R$ 518 milhões).
Na sequência da lista aparecem o jogador americano de basquete LeBron James, o tenista suíço Roger Federer, os jogadores americanos de golfe Tiger Woods e Phil Mickelson, o boxeador filipino Manny Pacquiao, o jogador americano de basquete Kevin Durant e o piloto inglês de F-1 Lewis Hamilton.
