A Fórmula 1 e a Pirelli testarão um novo formato de classificação no GP da Hungria deste fim de semana, em uma ideia que pode se tornar definitiva para o próximo ano. O qualicatório manterá seu formato habitual de Q1, Q2 e Q3, mas não haverá estratégias de uso dos pneus, já que todos serão forçados a usar o pneu duro no Q1, o médio no Q2 e o macio no Q3.
A Pirelli levará para a Hungria os compostos C5 (macio), o C4 (médio) e o C3 (duro). Eles são os três compostos mais macios da gama de pneus da F1 em 2023. A F1 continua buscando ser cada vez mais sustentável e, ao estabelecer o número de pneus exigidos em cada fase classificatória, reduz-se o número de jogos usados a cada final de semana, de 13 para 11. Além de usar menos pneus, a pegada de carbono também é reduzida ao transportar menos rodas ao redor do mundo, já que duas a menos para 20 pilotos significa mover 40 jogos a menos ou 160 pneus.
Cada piloto terá 11 jogos de pneus para todo o fim de semana, distribuídos da seguinte forma: Três conjuntos de pneus duros, quatro jogos de pneus médios e quatro jogos de pneus macios.
Sete jogos de pneus desses onze serão para classificação e corrida (na corrida eles terão que usar dois jogos diferentes obrigatoriamente, como já acontece), enquanto dos outros quatro, eles terão que devolver um à Pirelli após o TL1, outro após o TL2 e mais dois após o TL3. Se a chuva aparecer novamente, a alocação de quatro pneus de chuva intermediários e três extremos permanece. A segunda prova escolhida para receber este formato é o GP da Itália, em setembro.
