Pela primeira vez na história, uma equipe baiana disputará a Copa Sul-Americana de Basquete, principal torneio de base do continente. O marco será alcançado pelo Bulldogs Basquetebol, que representará a Bahia com suas categorias Sub-16 e Sub-19 na competição, marcada para acontecer entre os dias 20 e 26 de julho de 2025, em Santa Rita do Sapucaí (MG).
O Bulldogs nasceu do desejo de Fernando Barcelos — hoje presidente do clube — de criar oportunidades para seus filhos praticarem o esporte em um cenário com poucas opções estruturadas na Bahia. A iniciativa rapidamente ganhou força e passou a mobilizar famílias e jovens talentos com um propósito comum: fortalecer o basquete de base no estado. Ao lado de Barcelos estão Marcus Vinícius Rhamnuzia, vice-presidente, e Michele de Souza, secretária-geral da organização.
Segundo Barcelos, o projeto ultrapassou as quadras e virou um verdadeiro movimento social.
A trajetória rumo à Copa incluiu uma seletiva com mais de 100 jovens atletas de todo o estado. Desses, 22 foram escolhidos para integrar os elencos que representarão a Bahia no torneio. A competição reunirá 110 equipes divididas em 112 categorias, somando 395 partidas. Além de proporcionar experiência competitiva, o evento é uma vitrine para novos talentos do basquete sul-americano.
Mas para o presidente do Bulldogs, a missão do projeto vai muito além da performance esportiva.
