Um cerimônia online será feita para anunciar o vencedor, prevista para o dia 17 de janeiro de 2022. Neymar Jr. é o único brasileiro presente entre os indicados. Jorginho está na lista representando a Itália.

O prêmio é dado para o jogador que melhor desempenhou seu futebol no ano, levando em conta as atuações pelo clube e também pela seleção. Os indicados fazem parte da elite do futebol europeu e, além do destaque individual, o prêmio pode ser dado para quem estava presente também nas conquistas coletivas.
A França, mesmo não vencendo a Eurocopa, ainda possui um bom time e foi a seleção que mais colocou jogadores entre os finalistas. São 3 deles disputando o prêmio: Benzema, Kanté e Mbappé. O prêmio The Best acompanha e mantém os mesmos vencedores do prêmio Ballon d’Or, da revista France Football. O único ano que a premiação não foi igual, ocorreu ano passado, em 2020. Lewandowski venceu o prêmio The Best, mas não houve premiação da Bola de Ouro, sem vencedores. A expectativa era que o polonês levasse o prêmio.
