Morreu nesta quinta-feira (24), aos 66 anos, José Adilson Rodrigues dos Santos, o Maguila. Vítima de demência pugilística, diagnosticada em 2013. O ex-lutador sofria de ETC (encefalopatia traumática crônica), uma doença similar ao mal de Alzheimer, causada por repetitivos golpes na cabeça e afeta, principalmente, ex-atletas de boxe.
Irani Pinheiro, esposa do lutador, confirmou a morte ao programa Balanço Geral, da RECORD. Maguila nasceu no dia 11 de julho de 1958, em Aracaju. Desde 2017, morava em uma casa de repouso. Ele ganhou o apelido Maguila por sua semelhança com um personagem de desenho animado.
O peso-pesado começou a carreira no esporte com a ajuda do narrador e empresário Luciano do Valle. O jornalista tinha uma empresa, a Luqui, que assessorava o atleta e o colocou para treinar com o famoso treinador americano Angelo Dundee, que dirigiu mitos do boxe como Muhammad Ali, George Foreman e Jimmy Ellis.
Revelação do boxe
O começo da carreira foi promissor, foram 14 vitórias seguidas de 1983 a 1985, ficando dois anos invicto e conquistando o Campeonato Sul-Americano dos pesos-pesados. Mesmo com os resultados positivos, Maguila era criticado pela fragilidade de seus adversários e a falta de técnica em algumas situações. Ele, porém, era o brasileiro mais bem ranqueado na categoria.Em 1989, Maguila e a Luqui romperam contrato, isso porque Luciano Do Valle havia decidido pelo fim da carreira do boxeador, fato que o atleta não concordou. Na década de 90, Maguila teve a chance de derrotar dois dos maiores nomes do boxe mundial: Evander Holyfield e George Foreman. Porém, saiu derrotado em ambas as lutas, todas por nocaute. Com Holyfield, inclusive, disputou o cinturão do CMB (Conselho Mundial de Boxe) de pesos-pesados.
Campeão mundial
Em 1995, foi campeão mundial da FMB (Federação Mundial de Boxe), organização menos badalada, ao vencer o britânico Johnny Nelson na decisão por pontos. Cinco anos depois, decidiu encerrar a carreira após derrota por nocaute para o brasileiro Daniel Frank.
Ao todo, Maguila sustentou um cartel de 85 lutas, sendo 77 vitórias, um empate e apenas sete derrotas. Além do Sul-Americano e do Mundial, o atleta conquistou o Campeonato Brasileiro, o pentacampeonato continental e o Campeonato das Américas. Fora dos ringues, Maguila era considerado uma figura folclórica. Ele trabalhou na TV como comentarista econômico e chegou a fazer parte do elenco fixo do Show do Tom, na RECORD.
Além disso, Maguila gravou um CD de Samba intitulado ‘Vida de Campeão’. Em 2010, disputou eleição para deputado federal pelo PEN, mas obteve poucos votos e não se elegeu.
