Após 35 anos, a Holanda voltaria a sediar este ano uma corrida de Fórmula 1, mas a pandemia do novo coronavírus (covid-19) forçou o adiamento no evento para 2021. A prova de Zandvoort, província no norte do país, inicialmente programada para o último dia 3, já havia sido adiada, mas hoje (28) os organizadores do Grande Prêmio (GP) decidiram pelo cancelamento da corrida, tendo em vista que a competição ocorreria sem a presença de público, caso fosse remarcada.
“Nós e a Fórmula 1 investigamos o potencial de realizar uma corrida remarcada para este ano, sem espectadores, mas gostaríamos de comemorar este momento – o retorno da Fórmula 1 em Zandvoort – junto com nossos fãs de corrida na Holanda. Pedimos a todos que sejam pacientes. Eu tive que esperar por 35 anos, então eu posso esperar mais um ano”, esclareceu o diretor esportivo do GP da Holanda, Jan Lammers, em comunicado oficial publicado no site da Fórmula 1.
Desde 1985, quando o austríaco Niki Lauda saiu vitorioso, o país não recebia uma prova do Campeonato Mundial de Fórmula 1. O circuito passou por reformas de modernização e adequação, exigidas pela Federação Internacional de Automobilismo (FIA). O interesse pelo retorno da disputa no país cresceu, principalmente, devido ao sucesso do piloto holandês Max Verstappen.
Em meio à pandemia de covid-19, o GP da Holanda é a quarta prova extinta do calendário da F1 este ano. Antes, os GPs da Austrália, Mônaco e França já haviam sido cancelados. Além disso, foram adiados os GPs do Bahrein (Vietnã), China, Holanda, Espanha, Azerbaijão e Canadá. Atualmente, os organizadores da competição miram no GP da Áustria, programado para julho, que abrirá a temporada 2020.
