Em meio ao cenário de incertezas no futebol sul-americano por conta da pandemia da Covid-19, Fifa e Conmebol adiaram uma decisão sobre o início das Eliminatórias da América do Sul para a Copa do Mundo de 2022 para hoje, data marcada para a próxima reunião entre as entidades.
Uma reunião do conselho da Conmebol nesta segunda por teleconferência poderia definir a manutenção ou suspensão da Data Fifa de outubro, mas o tema voltará a ser discutido, desta vez em tom definitivo. O maior entrave atual é a liberação ou não dos jogadores que atuam na Europa – a Conmebol quer garantias de que terá os melhores atletas disponíveis.
A pandemia da Covid-19 já impediu a realização dos jogos de março, quando começariam as eliminatórias – as seleções, inclusive, chegaram a divulgar convocações. Depois, no começo deste mês, a Conmebol considerou que ainda não havia condições para a disputa dos jogos entre seleções, com viagens pelo continente.
Na semana passada, a Conmebol decidiu convocar uma reunião de seu conselho para ontem para tratar do assunto. No último sábado, dirigentes da confederação se encontraram com representantes da Fifa e das associações nacionais para iniciar as conversas.
A possível suspensão da Data Fifa de outubro veio à tona anteriormente, há um mês, quando a Colômbia apresentou a ideia de não jogar em outubro e fazer quatro jogos das eliminatórias em novembro – na última janela de jogos entre seleções em 2020.
A Fifa já abriu data alternativa em janeiro de 2022. Mas com seis jogos a menos de Eliminatórias de 18 partidas para seleção, a mudança de fórmula seria analisada, com possibilidade de repetir módulos antigos da competição, com dois grupos de cinco países.
As condições distintas de países para controle e prevenção da Covid-19 são desafio de logística – boa parte dos atletas vêm de países europeus -, mas há também questões de geração de renda das partidas. Os jogos do Brasil, geralmente, têm rendas altíssimas. O que se repete em outros países.
Depois da Concacaf confirmar adiamento para março de 2021, a Conmebol ainda reluta em adiar, pelos compromissos comerciais que possui. Mas há entendimento da maioria das associações de países por mudanças de datas. No Uruguai, inclusive, o técnico Óscar Tabarez já manifestou dúvida sobre a realização das partidas, lembrando justamente as situações distintas entre os países.
