O Bahia de Feira está há dois jogos de conseguir um feito histórico: o acesso à Série C do Campeonato Brasileiro, mas para alcançar este feito terá pela frente o Athletic, um clube mineiro, que é neófito em termos de competições nacionais, mas é considerada uma equipe emergente do interior, mais precisamente da cidade de São João Del Rei, terra natal do ex-presidente Tancredo Neves.
O Bahia de Feira eliminou o Nacional/AM no último sábado (19) e escreve mais um capítulo na sua história: o Tremendão já faz a sua melhor participação na Série D do Campeonato Brasileiro, ao estar entre os oito melhores na competição e a duas partidas de ascender à Série C em 2024. O time perdeu em Manaus por 3 x 2, mas como venceu por 2 x 0 o jogo de ida se classificou pelo placar agregado e segue vivo na 4ª divisão na nacional. O próximo adversário agora é o emergente Athletic, que mesmo sendo um clube com mais de 100 anos de existência, é “calouro” na Série D e na escalada do futebol é considerada uma equipe emergente no futebol mineiro.
A agremiação foi fundada em 1909 e teve participação ativa no futebol estadual por um tempo, porém no final dos anos 60 se ausentou competições profissionais e depois um longo hiato – que durou – 48 temporadas retorna às atividades profissionais em 2018, disputando a 3ª divisão do Campeonato Mineiro e desde então, a equipe vem trilhando o caminho de sucesso que a levou a elite estadual em 2021. No seu retorno, terminou na 8º colocação, se classificando para a Taça Inconfidência.
No ano passado, o Athletic fez uma campanha histórica no Campeonato Mineiro , terminando na segunda colocação na primeira fase, e se classificando assim para o Campeonato Brasileiro de 2023 – Série D, e também para a Copa do Brasil de 2023. Nas semifinais do estadual, acabou sendo eliminado pelo Cruzeiro, sendo assim, teve que disputar o título do Campeonato Mineiro do Interior, contra a Caldense. Na decisão de terceiro lugar, após empate nos dois jogos, o time venceu nos pênaltis, se sagrando Campeão do Interior.
Este ano, o time foi mais uma vez Campeão Mineiro do Interior, sendo o único fora da capital a se classificar para a semifinal do Campeonato Mineiro de 2023. Os outros classificados foram: Cruzeiro, América e Atlético, os três de Belo Horizonte. Na semifinal, foi eliminado pelo Atlético. Na Série D, na primeira fase, o Athletic foi o primeiro colocado do Grupo F com 29 pontos e na sequência, eliminou o Brasiliense na 2ª fase, com um triunfo e um empate.
Na terceira fase, os mineiros encararam o Camboriú/SC e passaram com uma derrota e um triunfo. Terminou com a segunda melhor campanha geral, somando 36 pontos em 18 jogos com 11 triunfos, 3 empates e 4 derrotas. O Bahia de Feira foi 0 7º colocado com 27 pontos com 7 triunfos, 6 empates e 5 derrotas e por esta razão o primeiro jogo será em Feira de Santana no próximo sábado (26) e o jogo de volta será no outro sábado (2) em São João Del Rei.
