O piloto brasileiro Gil de Ferran morreu na tarde desta sexta-feira (29), aos 56 anos, ao sofrer uma parada cardíaca enquanto dirigia na Flórida, nos EUA. Vencedor das 500 Milhas de Indianápolis em 2003, ele também conquistou a Fórmula 3 Inglesa e foi bicampeão da CART (atual IndyCar Series). Ele estava testando um carro no circuito privado The Concours Club, quando se sentiu mal e parou na entrada dos boxes. Foi levado para o hospital, mas não resistiu. Gil deixa a esposa, Angela, e os filhos Anna e Luke.
Como tantos pilotos, Gil iniciou a carreira no kart, onde conquistou títulos, como o Brasileiro de 87. Atuou também na Fórmula 3000 entre 1993 e 1994. Ele fez testes na Fórmula 1 na Arrows, mas, em um intervalo entre as baterias, bateu a cabeça em um caminhão. Os ferimentos fizeram com que Gil perdesse sua chance na F1. Em 1995, foi tentar a vida nos EUA e fez sua estreia na Indy. Em sua primeira temporada, foi eleito novato do ano. O primeiro título na categoria veio em 2000, na Penske, com duas vitórias e 168 pontos. Um ano depois, conquistou o bicampeonato também com duas vitórias e, desta vez, 199 pontos.

Em 2002, migrou junto com a Penske para a Indy Racing League (IRL). Seu maior feito na competição veio em 2003, quando venceu as 500 milhas de Indianápolis. Desde 2017 estava na McLaren, onde começou como coach de Fernando Alonso nas 500 Milhas de Indianápolis. Em julho de 2018, Gil de Ferran assumiu o recém-criado cargo de diretor esportivo na McLaren. Em agosto de 2019, passou a cuidar do projeto da McLaren na Fórmula Indy, deixando o cargo no início de 2021.
Atualmente, Gil de Ferran vinha atuando como consultor da McLaren na Fórmula 1 durante o processo de reestruturação da equipe.
